Jenny has mentored me in the areas of UI design and how to operate as a highly effective freelance UX designer.
As a person who didn’t train in graphic design, I wanted to add visual UI skills to my existing UX design skills set and specialize in a specific niche. Jenny assisted me in working out a good niche and how to market myself.
She has been amazing in putting together a plan and assisting me during a period of mentorship consultations. Her assistance and the realisation that a lot of time and practise is needed to become good at this have been key.
Working with Jenny as a mentor has been a game changer. I highly recommend her!

Remote UX Designer
Jenny’s mentorship played a huge part in helping me kickstart my career in UX, as well as providing guidance as a UXer daily while on the job.
Jenny is a great listener and is very quick to understand the root question being asked. Being able to laser focus on the crux of an issue means that our 1-on-1 sessions are very productive.
Apart from professional advice, Jenny also gave invaluable support to me on a personal level. Striking out as a freelancer has had its challenges and I was glad to have been able to count on Jenny to understand my situation no matter what it could be.
To have such a sincere, reliable and knowledgeable mentor, was definitely not something I thought I’d find when I started my UX career!

Freelance Product Designer
In my UX learning journey so far, I learned the most during Jenny’s mentorship program. Jenny’s mentorship program helped me in many aspects. The side project I did in the program helped me fully practice UX. With Jenny’s guidance, I learned which part needs to be improved, and how.
In every 1-on-1 call, Jenny can always tell me what and how to improve, from UX projects, portfolio, resume, and cover letter. Jenny listens to my doubts and clears these doubts patiently, gives me feedback very quickly. At the end of the program, I am able to have a complete portfolio with a detailed UX study.
I strongly recommend people who want to accelerate UX learning to join this mentorship program.

UI Designer at Gafolio
The fee is 150 USD for 1h session. After the first consultation, I will propose you a customized mentorship plan from 4 to 6+ months, with 1 to 2 consultations per month depending on your and my availability.
There is no fixed fee because every person’s starting point and goals are different. Some goals are lofty, and some can be reached in the short-term.
My mentorship works best to help one practice apply UX knowledge in real or side projects. For the mentorship to be most effective, you’ll need to learn the UX fundamentals.
If you don’t have any design background at all, first take an online or offline UX course, then you’ll be better equipped for mentorship.
Some people mentor for free, but that doesn't mean it should be free.
My experience of being a free mentor: I took on 39 mentees during my Christmas/New Year break for the Out of Office Hours initiative, all for free. 12 out of 39 (~30%) were no-show while I blocked time off work and waited for them to show up on Skype. Simply put, people don’t value something if they can get it for free.
Charging a small fee means:
1. A security for you that this mentorship program won’t stop when I get busy. How often have you emailed people you look up to but never received a reply? As your mentor, I dedicate time to answer every question. Most questions are replied within 24 hours.
2. I get compensated for the care, time, energy and dedication I put towards my mentees. (That sounds fair, if you ask me)
3. It filters out people that are not serious and who do not value mentorship.
4. I get to mentor people that are dedicated and invested in their own success, who are the best kind of mentees.
Essentially, I am offering career consultation services, which many others are doing for a living.
This mentorship is meant for UX/product designers and/or people who want to pursue freelancing.
If you want to become a full-stack Product Designer that also codes, I highly recommend my good friend Jeff who has 4 years of front-end mentoring experience. With both mentors, you'll fast-track your way to being a skilled full-stack designer.
If you're looking for a mentor in a specific industry (e.g. NGOs, fintech, etc.) and it's not an area that I specialise in, you'll benefit more from having a different mentor.
In my experience as a mentor, I see best results when a mentee is proactive, open to share her/his situations and asks thoughtful questions. I evaluate the applications by one's proactiveness, openness, commitment and activity in the community.
Absolutely! If you decide to go in a different direction, I will gladly refund you. If you were a no-show in the first consultation without rescheduling, I do not offer any refunds.
Don’t have several months to engage in a mentor-mentee relationship for ongoing support and advice?
For a limited time only, I am offering portfolio and resume reviews for individuals who have a limited budget and still want to move forward in their job search.
You can now get your portfolio or resume reviewed and redlined, accompanied with portfolio references and resources for a small fee. This service does not include a video consultation.
